Enrichment Works’ longest standing relationship is with the Youth Development Program (YDP) of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), which is part of its Beyond the Bell Branch, offering after school enrichment. There are currently 131 YDP school sites, with a student enrollment over 10,000. Enrichment Works has presented over 4,000 performances to YDP students since 1999. The program considered us a key part of its success, measured by the academic progress of its students. Isuare Blandin, lead administrator for YDP states, “Teachers and administrators were thrilled that students would discuss the play during the school day and share their experiences with other students. This encouraged reading and writing among all students and some were also inspired to write their own stories and plays. Enrichment Works plays bridged the opportunity for learning across the curriculum through subject matter based on state Content Standards. All of that ended two years ago when the Los Angeles Unified School District, facing massive budget cutbacks, eliminated most contracts for outside agencies serving the after school population. How to Help:Donate funds to sponsor performances at YDP sites. It costs Enrichment Works between $300 and $500 (Cost depends on the number of actors.) to send a play or musical to a school.
In addition to the performance, we provide a resource packet specific to each of our plays and musicals that includes information and activities that can be used before and after the presentation to help students engage in and understand the program more deeply.
Each YDP site has over 100 students, and at $300-$500 per show that breaks down to a cost of less than $3.00-$5.00 per student, per show. Additionally, once programming is arranged with YDP, all other on-site afterschool programs are invited to attend the performance, so in many cases we reach well over 200 students, effectively providing a quality theatrical experience to youth for a cost of less than $1.50-$2.50 per student.
A tax-deductable donation of $1,000 would bring programs to two or three schools, $5,000, would serve 10-14 sites, $10,000 would serve 20 – 30. As a donor/sponsor we welcome your input as to which areas you would like to serve and/or which plays you would like us to present.
